장세진

연극 기반 다매체 아티스트로 활동 중인 장세진은 변형과 상호작용이 일어나는 공간에 주목하여, 공연과 뉴 테크놀로지를 결합한 형태의 관객 참여형 경험을 설계한다. 한국예술종합학교 연극원 연출과에서 학사학위를 취득하고, 현재 영상원 멀티미디어 영상과 전문사 과정에서 연구를 심화하고 있다. 연극을 공부하면서 공간과 서사가 서로 어떻게 영향을 주고받는지 관심을 갖게 되었고, 빈 공간에 존재감을 부여하는 퍼포먼스 매커니즘을 탐구한다. 특히 XR 및 웹 기반 기술을 활용해 관객을 창조적 시스템 안으로 끌어들이는 공연 구조를 개발 중이며, 개인 작업과 함께 실험적 협업과 학제 간 탐구를 추구하는 아티스트 그룹 받침 랩 을 이끌고 있다.

장세진의 작업은 예측 불가능한 흐름 속에서 낯선 시각적/감각적 이미지를 생성한다. 상충하는 요소들이 격렬히 충돌하며, 비정형적이고 유동적인 방향으로 분산되는 과정을 매혹적이라 여긴다. 공연을 통해 질문을 제기하는 과정에서 발생하는 긴장감과 그 너머의 생명력을 중시하며, 혼돈을 긍정적이고 생산적인 상태로 재해석한다. 모든 것을 명료하게 규정하려는 욕망과의 끈임없는 갈등 속에서, 언어 너머의 실재를 포착하고 전달하려는 시도를 이어가고자 한다. 인위적 언어의 경계를 넘어서는 상호작용의 순간에서 비롯될 역동성을 작업의 핵심 동력으로 삼는다.

최근작 <Haters에게 바치는 체조>에서는 ‘체조’라는 퍼포먼스 행위를 매개로 인간과 기계 간의 관계성을 조명하며, 주체-타자 간의 역학(dynamics)과 존재론적 평등을 탐구했다. 이어 <Rapunzels에게 바치는 클라이밍>에서는 ‘클라이밍’을 통해 인간 정체성과 기원(rootedness)에 대한 질문을 확장시키며, 존재론적 성찰을 한층 심화시켰다. 특히 한국 사회의 혈연 중심 가족 구조와 민족주의적 담론이 개인의 정체성 형성에 미치는 영향을 분석하며, 입양/혼혈/이민자 경험에서 ‘뿌리’의 의미를 재고한다. 앞으로도 신체적 행위를 기반으로 관계성과 정체성의 본질을 탐구하는 작업을 지속할 계획이다.

JANG SEJIN

JANG SEJIN, a theatre-based multimedia artist, focuses on spaces of transformation and interaction, designing audience-engaged experiences that fuse performance with new technology. A graduate of the School of Drama at Korea National University of Arts with a bachelor’s in directing, Sejin is currently deepening their research in the Graduate School of Film, TV & Multimedia, specializing in multimedia imaging. Their study of theatre sparked a curiosity about the interplay between space and narrative, leading them to explore performance mechanisms that breathe presence into empty spaces. By harnessing XR and web-based technologies, they develop structures that draw audiences into creative systems. Alongside their solo work, Sejin leads Batchim Lab, an artist collective dedicated to experimental collaboration and interdisciplinary inquiry.

Sejin’s practice thrives on generating unfamiliar visual and sensory imagery within unpredictable flows. They are captivated by the collision of opposing forces, scattering in fluid, amorphous directions. Through performance, they pose questions, embracing the tension this evokes and the vitality that follows, reimagining chaos as a positive, productive force. Caught in a constant tug-of-war with the urge to define everything clearly, they seek to capture and convey realities beyond language, finding the dynamism of interactions that transcend artificial boundaries to be the driving force of their work.

In their recent piece <Exercises for Haters>, Sejin uses the act of “gymnastics” to explore human-machine relationships, delving into the dynamics of subject-other relations and ontological equality. Following this, <Climbing for Rapunzels> expands these questions into human identity and rootedness through “climbing,” deepening existential reflections. Sejin examines how Korea’s bloodline-centric family structures and nationalist discourses shape individual identity, rethinking the meaning of “roots” in the experiences of adoptees, mixed-race individuals, and immigrants. Moving forward, they aim to continue probing the essence of relationships and identity through embodied actions.
